Why Is Mardi Gras Important

When I found out that I was going to Loyola, the first response that I got from all of my friends wasn't congratulations or good luck but instead "Oh my gawwd! Can I come for Mardi Gras?" This city is a notorious party city, and the goal for most people that visit is basically to get wasted. And although that's still a main goal for many people during Mardi Gras, the atmosphere of the city is different. As the new year roles around, everything seems so much less stressful because in the back of everyones mind is Mardi Gras. This is my first Mardi Gras, so it may seem like I'm getting a little ahead of myself, but even I can tell the differences in peoples attitudes. The population of New Orleans is basically radiating with giddiness similar to children on Christmas eve.

New Orleans is a city that has suffered from intense struggle, whether it be the history of racism, corruption, or natural disasters. This city deserves a time to be childish and regress, if only for a day or two, and the celebration of Mardi Gras successful does this. It may just be colorful lights or it may  be the copious amounts of alcohol, but whatever it is that changes the city during this time...it works.
