Mardi Gras is essential to New Orleans because it contributes to the New Orleans culture.
According to this article, the author wrote that the founders of New Orleans, Iberville and Bienville brought the Mardi Gras tradition to New Orleans (http://www.nola.com/mardigras/index.ssf/2009/01/the_history_of_carnival.html). Besides the history background, Mardi Gras is an event that brings people around the world to gather in one city for a time of entertainment. I find it interesting when people from different countries come to Mardi Gras. I was in the school band for high school and one of things we had to do was march in parades. While I was marching in the uptown parades, one of the things that caught my eye was this little girl, with her family, was holding a stick that was attached with a bucket and a sign that said "We are from Denmark, we would like dubloons!" I was amazed when I found that people from Demark flew all the way over here just for Mardi Gras.
I believe that Mardi Gras is a time for laughter, and enjoyment. When is it likely that you will see a gigantic float on the street on a daily basis? This event only comes once a year and it just cannot be missed!
