I’ve never been to Mardi Gras, so what came to mind when I think about the holiday is lots of plastic beads and lewd behavior. To be honest, I had no idea why Mardi Gras mattered. So rather than making up something and posting it, I decided to interview my friends from here.
I first talked to a friend who has lived in New Orleans her whole life. When I asked her why Mardi Gras mattered, she thought I meant the history of Mardi Gras and how that developed throughout the years. The thing was, other than a few things she didn’t really know the history of Mardi Gras. I thought it was kind of funny that this was such a big holiday to her and her family, but she couldn’t really go into detail. When we got into why it mattered to her, you could tell it was a really big deal. She talked about for her it was a family holiday and that they had a lot of traditions, such as where they watched parades and so on.
This is actually the start of an interesting post! You have gotten to very different views of why Mardi Gras matters but neither seemed able to really articulate why it matters nor could they tell you much, if anything, about the origins and evolution of the event. Didn't you feel a bit of curiousity??? I will be interested to see what you make of it once you have a chance to experience it!
